Mailing ListsWhat are mailing lists?Mailing Lists are lists of companies or consumers a company would send marketing information to, in the form of a campaign. Mailing lists can be as small or as large as necessary but larger mailing lists obviously reap higher volume responses. Usually before mailing lists are released you will be required to submit a sample piece that reflects what you would be sending to your mailing lists for approval from the list owner. You may only send out the approved piece to the mailing lists unless the list owner agrees otherwise. You will need to ensure the information you send to the mailing lists conforms to the British Code Of Advertising and Sales Promotion (BCASP) and is legal. Direct Mail is a little easier to cost, because the variations are more in what you decide to do rather than where you live, the time of day, week or year. Assuming that you rent mailing lists of the people you want to reach, rather than use your own existing customer mailing lists, you might be looking at an average of £120 per 1000 for a comprehensive targeted mailing list. One of the keys to success in B2B direct marketing is building your own database to increase your revenues and gathering relevant mailing lists is an integral part of this. Purchasing information, especially large amounts should be treated much the same as any other large purchasing decision. Thinking about how easy mailing lists are to understand, interpret, use and format is often as relevant as data accuracy. It is worth taking time to consider a few parameters before purchasing mailing lists, such as readability, how understandable it is, whether your match rate was high enough to use in modelling or list processing, how quick the turnaround delivery time will be and how helpful or responsive the provider is. Multi-use or data-licensing is a way of buying mailing lists and reducing wastage on list costs, dependant on the number of times you wish to mail in an agreed time period. The more times you contact the mailing lists, the higher the cost will be. If you are planning on using the mailing lists more than twice or continually mailing the data within a fixed period, then it is more practical to agree a data license fee. These time periods for using mailings lists are usually for a maximum of one year, although with the correct cleansing procedures employed, they can be extended for as long as appropriate. In summary, terms for consideration, when negotiating for mailings lists are: the length of the period for the agreement, the number of times mailed within the period and the permitted purposes of the data i.e. direct mail, telephoning etc and whether suppression files or total refresh of the data is supplied. |
